Why does my child refuse to do homework?

80% of kids diagnosed with a learning difficulty don’t have a problem learning, they have a problem reading. If reading is a struggle, homework automatically becomes a struggle.

Five other indicators that your child might have a reading difficulty are:

  • substituting words while reading
  • Struggles with writing and spelling
  • Avoids reading
  • Speech and hearing difficulties at a younger age
  • Difficulty putting thoughts on paper

Why can’t I motivate my child?

It is tough to motivate a child to go to a place everyday where the majority of focus is on the one thing that they do not do well.  The majority of our school day is spent dealing with text.  Understand that they are not doing anything you would not do as an adult if you were placed in similar circumstances.

If you can teach them to read and read well you will go a long way to removing the frustration and giving them the solid foundation they need to be successful.

Why do I feel like such a failure?

Please do not feel like you have done something wrong.  As a parent, it is easy to take the blame however, if your child is struggling in school it usually has nothing to do with something the parents did or did not do.

Am I the only one that thinks there is something wrong?

As a parent you are the expert about your child.  If you feel that something is not being addressed by the school system, then you need to find help elsewhere.  From all the different discussions we have had with the parents over the years, you can trust us when we say that you are not alone!

Are other parents going through the same thing?

Yes, other parents are having the same problems.  A lot of them are very frustrated mainly because they feel so helpless.  They have tried everything, but nothing seems to work.

Does my child have a learning disability?

The term “learning disability” is a very vague term as it defines very little.  If you or your child has difficulty with learning, is it not better to fix the problem than placing a label on it? Eighty percent of individuals who have been diagnosed with a learning disability have their basic deficits in reading.

Is reading the problem?

Eighty percent of individuals who have been diagnosed with a learning disability have their basic deficits in reading.

How do I know that you will make a difference?

The Beacon program has made a positive, significant difference for thousands of individuals, both children and adults.  We have parents who are willing to talk to you over the phone, to provide you with a testimonial. All of our assessment materials that we use are North American norm referenced.

Yes, we guarantee a one grade level increase after twenty hours of instruction.  However, our average increase is 2.7 grade levels.
